Strategic CIO Coaching
An alternative to an OCIO, built to empower you, not replace you, as your clients’ investment expert. Walk into your next prospect meeting knowing more about their current portfolio than the advisor who built it.
Many advisors have what it takes to be their clients' investment expert. They just need a fellow professional in their corner to help them stay confident in the role. If you want a sounding board for everything related to investments, without the ulterior motive of selling you something and without a third party stepping in front of your clients, I built this for you.
Who This Is For
$30,000 per year. A flat fee. No AUM fees and no setup fee.
Billed in arrears. Monthly ($2,500) or quarterly ($7,500), your choice.
Engaging Strategic CIO Coaching also earns you a 20% discount on the setup rate for HPM's Portfolio Management & Trading Desk, and HPM may waive the 30-account firm minimum for that service.
What It Costs
A foundational assessment. We start by gathering as much data as possible on how you currently approach investments. I review what I see and provide a thorough analysis that we discuss over two 2-hour sessions. In the first session, we talk about the analysis and get your feedback. Before the second session, I incorporate your feedback and prepare specific recommendations and an implementation plan.
Biweekly sessions. From there, we set up a regular biweekly meeting. At first, we’ll spend that time implementing HPM’s recommendations together. Those meetings are our time to keep you on track and discuss whatever is pertinent for you: handling performance discussions, discussing current events, or learning a new investment concept. I become your unbiased sounding board for everything related to investments.
Prospect portfolio breakdowns. You send me redacted statements, and I send you a custom video with robust analytics and talking points covering fee structure, investment vehicles, asset allocation, active/passive mix, diversification, factor exposure, tax drag, performance, and key risks. True to form, I stay in the background, and you take the lead with your prospect. The video arms you with the data and insight you need to make your best recommendations. And the best part: you can watch and rewatch it on your time, at your speed. Walk into your next prospect meeting knowing more about their current portfolio than the advisor who built it.
Quarterly white-label market review. Each quarter, I compile a market review you can put your own name on.
Permission to reference me. You can reference me and my credentials, CFA Charterholder and CFP® Practitioner, on your website as a third-party resource, not as the in-house investment expert. You stay in that role.
What HPM Offers
Throughout my career, especially as a Regional Director at Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA), I spoke with hundreds of RIAs. A few observations stuck with me over the years.
Even great advisors need reassurance when it comes to investing. I enjoy being that sounding board, replacing apprehension with a data-backed perspective.
Many advisors need support analyzing a prospect’s current investments and help articulating how their own approach differs. This is a role I've thrived in throughout my career, and I thoroughly enjoyed breaking down a prospect’s current holdings as an RIA myself.
Success breeds new hurdles. Managing differentiated portfolios for a handful of clients is manageable. Once you’re managing dozens of relationships, not so much. Advisors need help structuring investment processes and workflows for repeatability. I enjoy designing systematic processes for tasks like rebalancing, tracking inherited low-basis portfolios, and navigating concentrated positions.
RIAs would regularly call my fellow Regional Directors and me for support on these issues and more. I always found it interesting that we were a more preferred source of information than a neutral provider, like an OCIO. The feedback we often received was that advisors were concerned about introducing a third party as the investment expert. Until that point, clients believed their advisor was the investment expert. The advisors wanted to be empowered, not replaced.
With HPM’s Strategic CIO Coaching, I can be that professional in your corner, without the ulterior motive of selling you something. I have no interest in replacing your investment authority with your clients. I operate happily in the background, empowering you along the way.
Why I Built It This Way
Portfolio reviews and video talking points are educational and macro-level only. HPM does not provide specific security selection, recommended trades, or individualized retail suitability determinations. You are solely responsible for KYC, AML, and suitability determinations for your own clients, and must redact all client-identifying information before submitting data for review. These deliverables are for your firm's internal training and educational use and may not be shared or distributed directly to retail End-Clients.
Website references to Mike Falco and his professional designations are permitted only under a written Strategic CIO Coaching Agreement, and require specific disclosure language identifying him as an independent contractor who is not an employee, partner, or investment adviser representative of your firm, and who does not provide direct investment advice or suitability determinations to your retail clients. This permission terminates, and you must remove all such references within 48 hours of the Agreement's termination.
